WALL-E receives 2 Golden Globe nominations [UPDATE: Stanton reacts]

Minutes ago, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) completed their announcement of the nominations for the 66th Annual Golden Globe Awards. WALL-E received only two nods*, as follows:

  • Best Animated Feature Film

  • Best Original Song – Motion Picture (for "Down to Earth")

The Golden Globes will be presented on Sunday, January 11, 2009 at The Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California. The ceremony will be telecast live on NBC at 8 PM EST in the United States.

*Not happy here :(

Update: The Hollywood Reporter got director Andrew Stanton's reaction to today's events.

THR.com reports that Stanton 'wishes things weren't as segregated today', referring to the creation of the Best Animated Feature Film category at the Globes, which prohibited WALL-E from being a contender in the Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy slot.

He says:

"It's nice to know there's a definite place for animation, but it's a little frustrating because with the [HFPA], if you're in the [animation] category, you can't run in any other. Still, it is very exciting to be nominated."

Not happy either. It could have been worse, but WALL-E definitely got a raw deal.

Ugh. I was so happy yesterday about Wall-E's LA film critics best pic win. Now this? Best animated film? The Golden Globes (like the Oscars) have been hit hard ratings-wise in the past few years because they only recognize films which very few people see. If the Golden Globes (which is a relatively small voting group) choose to continue this trend of only honoring "Oscar bait" films, then it's their loss and their ratings will reflect that. I hope for better news from the Academy.

I saw this unfold on CBS this morning. The guy on the show said that WALL-E was not eligible for a Best Picture nomination (Drama or Comedy) because it was an animated film. I think that’s just complete bias BS. I hate that a truly deserving film is being snubbed out just because it’s animated.

I really hope the Academy Awards gives Wall-E its just dues.

Well, it wasn't eligible for much, including Best Picture. Its in the animation ghetto.

Where would WALL-E fit in a Best Picture category at the Golden Globes anyway? Best Drama? Best Comedy/Musical? I love WALL-E, but I agree with the majority of these nominations.

Not happy either, although I have an idea as to why. It got a Best Picture nod at the Critic's Choice (along with the other two it got here), but it seems the Golden Globes is broken up even more into categories, including Drama, Comedy and/or Musical, Foreign Film, and of course Animated Film. Since they have two categories for Best Picture, they likely feel that Best Animated Feature Film is just yet another category that specific films should go into. Plus, they probably couldn't decide whether to put it into Comedy or Drama if they did consider putting it there (Drama, duh, but it's considered a "kid's movie" by so many that they likely thought "it must be funny" too).

GAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!!!! I'm suddenly concerned about the Oscars....crap crap crap. This is ridiculous. Everyone in the right mind knows Wall-E was this year's best movie.

The thing is that everyone here loved the movie and that's what's important- not what anyone else thinks. Hollywood is just a big high school and the awards season is like a prom popularity contest. Pixar has opted not to be the "cool kids" to their credit and thus find themselves outside of the Hollywood buzz. I think Wall-E is the best movie in years and I hope it's and it's creators are recognized but ultimately it's the fact that we enjoy it that matters.

Huh? Pixar may've made a very non-Hollywood film, but they *are* being recognized by the "cool kids" for their work. They've already taken Best Picture in at least one award, and Best Animated in several others, not to mention being nominated for Best Picture in the Critic's Choice Awards. This lack of Best Picture Golden Globe nomination is just illustrating why the categories should not be segregated the way they are, it's not showing any bias against Pixar, which is clearly beloved by just about everyone these days.

That just makes no sense at all. So if we had a year of nothing but bad live-action and some really amazing animated film came along, it wouldn't be nominated? This is especially disappointing after the LA Critics Choice Best Film win.

Really? I would think it'd be comedy. Finding Nemo got the comedy nomination in 2004, and I think it definitely would've made it with that competition.

Who else misses the golden years of the 90s when Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, and Toy Story 2 (2000) all won Best Picture: Musical or Comedy? I seems people have forgotten that. They weren't always so biased at the Golden Globes.

But I certainly feel slighted by The Dark Knight not showing up for Best Picture! Totally eligible and in my opinion tied with WALL-E for this year's best.

I'm so glad to see TDK getting so few major awards. It will eventually help bring the fans down to Earth and make them realize that while it's a great superhero movie, it's not the best of all time and did have its problems.

And while it did have it's problems, it seemed to have made a more lasting impression on people than Crash, Ray, Sideways, Transamerica, Michael Clayton, Babel, Letters from Iwo Jima, and Capote did to name a few. Also a 9.0 IMDB rating. I think the Academy needs to reach deep into the heartstrings of the populace and solve their ratings problem by nominating movies people like! Like WALL-E!
